Corporations address gender equality issues in the context of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable development. As in other areas of CSR, various standards, certifications, and similar initiatives have been proposed to promote gender equality. Despite an increasing number of self‐regulation and signaling schemes being proposed, their study has been overlooked by the scholarly literature. This article tries to shed light on these standards through a two‐stage exploratory study. First, the main worldwide initiatives that focus on gender equality standards are scrutinized and mapped. Second, their main characteristics are analyzed, based on a content analysis of the information disclosed by organizations that foster the most relevant initiatives. A systematic analysis of relevant gender equality standards is provided. This work highlights a dispersion and lack of uniformity in terms of missions, results, measurement, and even the definition of gender equality or the term used to refer to it. No framework has prevailed. Gender equality standards lack gender mainstreaming and intersectionality is invisible. The business case appears to be the main driver of gender equality standards. The present study is one of the first attempts to thoroughly examine the institutional design of gender equality standards, their standard‐setting process as well as their enforcement. We suggest a rethink of the policies that promote the gender equality standards in organizations, as well as a need for collaborative work between managers and policymakers towards the use of common terminology, indicators, and uniformity regarding the terms to be certificated.

The study includes some theoretical insights about the sustainability of agriculture, respectively a sustainable and responsible production and consumption. Through the choices they decide to make, both the producer who chooses to produce a sustainable product and the consumer because he buys and consumes products certified according to sustainability standards, a market is created based on a common effort to contribute to the sustainable development of agriculture. The harmonious development of the agricultural sector has two key actors, the final consumer of which through daily choices of sustainable products will increase the demand for these products, and producers will move to sustainable agricultural practices to meet demand, the ultimate goal being creating a sustainable agrifood market that provides products corresponding to the requirements of the sustainability, in this case also taking care of the future of generations. This paper presents a quantitative and qualitative analysis about sustainable agriculture, responsible production and responsible consumption of agri-food products that aims to highlight the importance of the analyzed topic. At the same time, the paper presents the analysis of some indicators to reflect the current situation of Romania regarding the level of achievement the sustainable development objectives, to highlight the path taken and to determine development opportunities at an accelerated pace of fulfilment a sustainable agriculture. The main results regarding the development of agriculture aim at the sustainable demand which is represented by the increase of the population's awareness regarding especially the social aspects and those that imply the protection of the environment, which determines the choice of sustainable products and sustainable production is represented by the increase in the number of agricultural producers who obtain voluntary sustainability standards. Current trends tend towards resilience given social inequity and environmental awareness.

Private governance by means of voluntary sustainability standards (VSS) has become ubiquitous, especially for the governance of sustainability issues along global value chains in agriculture. As VSS have multiplied and proliferated, their commonalities and differences are not always easily discernable to value chain participants and their stakeholders. Concurrently, extant research is ambiguous on the degree of harmonization or diversification of standards currently available. Two core aspects have received particular attention: the meaning of sustainability reflected in VSS and the degree of stakeholder inclusion in standard governance. It is the purpose of this study to compare VSS from different types of standard setting initiatives regarding these two core aspects by analyzing their purported sustainability worldview and the inclusiveness of their institutional design. The quantitative exploration covers exemplars offered by inter-governmental organizations, business initiatives, non-governmental organizations as well as multi-stakeholder initiatives. The analysis finds significant ambiguity of sustainability worldviews across the sample, as well as almost universal uptake of design characteristics to enhance inclusiveness irrespective of the type of standard setting initiative. However, there are also significant differences in the way sustainability is understood among VSS offered by different standard setting initiatives.
