Volumetric shape description of range data using “Blobby Model”

Abstract: Recentlyin the field of computer vision, there have been many attempts to obtain a symbolic shape description of an object by fitting simple primitives to the range data of the object. In this paper, we introduce the "BIoJ Jy Mode/' for automatically generating a shape description from range data. This model can express a 3D surface as an isosurface of a scalar field which is produced by a number of field generating primitives. The fields from many primitives are blended with each other and can form a very com… Show more

“…Most recent papers evolve from Blinn's original work [6] and vary mainly in the types of local implicit functions used, e.g., linear combination of Gaussian blobs [41], bounded polynomial in three variables [50], blended union of spheres [38], and, more recently, mixtures of globally supported radial basis functions (RBF's) [10,54], as well as blended compactly supported RBF's [47,43,33]. A line of recent improvements is the multi-level partition of unity implicits (MPU's) [42,44,53].…”

“…However surfaces are not smooth since polygons are used for rendering. Recently, range data (Muraki 1991) has been used to render facial surfaces. Shinagawa and Kunii (1991) obtained complex surfaces of the internal organs using the Morse Theory.…”
