Volumetric lean percentage measurement using dual energy mammography

Abstract: The results of this study show strong linear relationships between volumetric lean percentage measurements using dual energy mammography, chemical analysis and the actual mass. Determining the existence of a relationship between VLP(I) and VLP(CA) was necessary before comparing density results from the dual energy technique to composition data from chemical analysis for samples of unknown composition.

“…Moreover, the current two-compartment model suffers large uncertainty from system calibration 11 due to the wide variations in the chemical composition of the fibroglandular and adipose tissue. 12,13 For example, it has been reported that the water concentration in adipose tissue may vary between 11.4% and 30.5%. 12 It has been reported that malignant tissues have a significantly higher water fraction compared to normal tissues.…”

“…2.D, a linear correlation is expected between the two variables. Since errors in the chemical analysis are expected to be negligible, 25 we used %FGV as the gold standard for objective evaluations of the investigated methods and the effects of the bias field correction by comparing the Pearson's r coefficients. In Fig.…”

“…(8). 25,34 Equation (8), which was derived under the assumption that the chemical compositions of pure glandular and pure adipose tissue are the same among all breast samples, results in a slope generally greater than 1 and a negative intercept. However, practically, water, lipid, and protein concentrations for the glandular and adipose tissues may vary in a small range as a Gaussian broadening.…”
