The speed of sound in high-purity n-hexane and n-heptane was experimentally studied utilizing the double-path length pulse-echo technique. Measurements with each alkane were carried out at temperatures from (233 to 353) K with pressures up to 20 MPa. Considering the uncertainty contributions from temperature, pressure, path-length calibration, pulse timing and sample purity, the relative expanded combined uncertainty (k = 2) in the speed of sound in n-hexane ranges from (0.012 to 0.042) % over the investigated ranges of pressure and temperature; for n-heptane, the uncertainty varies from (0.014 to 0.018) %. The sound speed data measured in n-hexane were among the data used for the development of a new fundamental equation of state, which is, however, not described in this work. The experimental data of n-heptane can be considered appropriate for modeling purposes and validation of existing equations of state.

Correlations proposed in this work predict density and viscosity with better accuracy in comparison with existing correlations. Dimensionless specific volume and logarithmic viscosity of binary mixtures are nth order (1 ≤ n ≤ 4) polynomials of the mole fraction of one of the components at the system temperature, and parametric coefficients of such polynomials are mth order (1 ≤ m ≤ 4) polynomials of system temperatures. Parametric coefficients of fitted fourth order Redlich−Kister type equations (RK-eq) are linear functions of temperature. Excess properties and derived thermodynamic properties of both mixtures have been discussed in terms of intramolecular and intermolecular interactions of molecules. Like virial equations of state (EOS), dimensionless RK-eq quantifies to calculate virial coefficients and hence to compute interactions among component 1−1, component 1−2, and component 2−2. Parametric coefficients of the Vogel−Fulcher−Tammann equation of viscosity are polynomials of mole fractions of one of the components.

Solvent extraction is one of the hydro metallurgical techniques adopted due to its ease for efficient separation of metal ions. The separation and extraction of metals are enabled using privileged metal distribution between the aqueous and organic phase. Commercially available solvent extractants and recently the designer solvents like ionic liquids have gained adequate attention in the area of separation science for the retrieval of different metal ions. Diluents play an important role by ensuring the improved hydrodynamics of the extraction system. The physico‐chemical characteristics of the organic phase solution need to be scrutinized thoroughly in order to optimize the extraction conditions. Investigation on the interaction between extractant and diluent at molecular level is vital for the assessment of extraction efficiency. Density, viscosity, dielectric constant, refractive index, conductivity, and acoustic properties provide evidence on the molecular organizations between these unlike molecules. The aim of this review is to project on the importance of physical, chemical, and thermodynamic properties for fabricating an efficient combination of extractants‐diluents to achieve maximum extraction output.
