Volume rendering on the MasPar MP-1

Abstract: This work presents the implementation of data-parallel perspective volume rendering on a massively parallel SIMD computer, the MasPar MP-1, and shows the benefits of e$icient indirect addressing (an MP-1 feature) which allows individual processing elements to address their local memory independently. Emphasis is put on the geometric transformations required for volume rendering algorithms. TJte data-parallel algorithm separates multi-dimensional spatial transformations into a series of one-dimensional operatio… Show more

“…Because of its lower computational overhead the shear-warp algorithm is more than five times faster for the 1283 data sets and more than ten times faster for the 2563 data sets. Our algorithm running on a workstation is competitive with algorithms for massively parallel processors ( [17], [19] and others), although the parallel implementations do not rely on coherence optimizations and therefore their performance results are not data dependent as ours are.…”

“…Interactive rendering rates have been reported using large parallel processors [17] [19] and using algorithms that trade off image quality for speed [10] [8], but highquality images take tens of seconds or minutes to generate on current workstations. In this paper we present a new algorithm which achieves near-interactive rendering rates on a workstation without significantly sacrificing quality.…”

“…Pure shear transformations have been implemented on several massively parallel distributed memory machines, such as the Connection Machine (CM-200) [14], Maspar MP-1 [17,18,19], and CAM-8 [16]. Because of the semi-regularity of our pseudo shear, it can also be very efficiently implemented on these machines.…”
