SYNOPSISEarly research trials in South Africa have shown that Eucalyptus species generally respond positively to the addition of nutrients at planting. However, as most of these research trials were located in KwaZuluNatal, it was important to investigate the nature of the response in other afforested regions of the country where this genus is planted. Consequently, a number offertilizer trials were established in the late 1980's and early 90's in Mpumalanga and the Northern Province to investigate the nature offertilizer responses in Eucalyptus species. Three of these trials form a series and were established to investigate the impact of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) additions made both individually and in combination. In addition, two trials in Mpumalanga were initiated to investigate genotype by fertilizer interactions. Viewed as a whole, the results indicate that growth improvements in response to the nutrient additions are readily obtainable. Highly significant positive responses to Nand P, each applied individually, occurred immediately after planting. The response to N appeared more sustained than the response to P. The best growth was observed when Nand P were applied together. The ratio ofN to P that gave the best response ranged from 3:1 to 3:2. No genotype by fertilizer interactions were observed in the trials investigating this aspect.

SYNOPSIS Genotype x environment interaction was investigated in a series of5 Pinus patula progeny trials planted by the Institute for Commercial Forestry Research in southern Africa. The trials were established from Mpumalanga to the North-eastern Cape in a balanced 7x7lattice design with 48 common treatments that comprised 45 unrelated, open-pollinated families and 3 genetic checks. The environments sampled represented a range of climatic and site quality gradients. All trees were assessed for height and diameter at 6 years of age. Survival was 87% and ranged from 83 to 92% across the 5 sites. Growth on the 5 sites varied from 0,034m 3 to 0,065m 3 / tree and single site heritability estimates ranged from 0,17 to 0,43. The interactions between site and treatment were highly significant. The overall GxE variance represented approximately 21% of the variance due to treatment. Estimated Type B genetic correlations averaged 0,76 for all pairs of sites with a range ofO,4 to 1,0 and were correlated with median rainfall during the spring period from September to November. Thejoint regression method was utilised to determine the stability of genotypes across sites. Some rank changes were detected across the 5 locations but these were limited to 15% of the families tested. Results indicate that GxE may be important for Pinus patula within southern Africa and that some form of regionalis ation may be possible using some simple environmental variables such as rainfall.

Genetic variances and heritabilities of a 66-month old cloned Eucalyptus grandis breeding population of families, derived from open-pollinated selections, were estimated. The genetic variance for the growth traits was largely additive genetic variance, whereas the proportion of non-additive genetic variance was notably higher for stem form and disease tolerance. A notably larger proportion of non-additive variance was observed for the growth traits and stem form among the F 2 families. This is probably due to the reduction in additive variance through selection for general combining ability for these traits in the previous generations. No selection for disease took place in earlier generations and the proportion of non-additive genetic variance for this trait remains approximately the same for families of different generations.
