Voltammetric Study of Organic Matter Components in the Upper Reach of the Krka River, Croatia

Abstract: The increased amount of organic matter (OM) accompanied with the development of hypoxia/anoxia and appearance of the sulphur species are indicators of eutrophication in natural waters. To predict biogeochemical and ecological changes, specific OM components in the Lake Brljan (the karst Krka River, Croatia; station B and station B2 downstream) were studied during 2011 and in January 2012 using voltammetry. Surface-active substances (eq. 0.018 to 0.150 mg dm -3 Triton-X-100) and Cu complexing capacity (54-680 n… Show more

“…whereas production during the spring and summer increases the contribution of autochthonous DOM (Strmečki et al, 2018). Our data support that in-situ production mainly releases protein-like substances, as already observed by (Osburn et al, 2012), making their contribution to the total fluorescence increasing from 11.4% in February to 30.1% in July.…”

“…Extreme case is the Arno River with more than 10-times higher DOC concentrations (320-365 µM) (Retelletti than the Krka River. The values reported in our study are lower than those measured by (Strmečki et al, 2018) in the upper reach of the Krka River (Brljan Lake) in March, May, June, September and November of 2011 and in January 2012 (45-127 µM). Despite the wide range of DOC concentrations, 80% of reported values was lower than 60 µM during their study, whereas values >100 µM were measured only in March and May 2011.…”

“…34.8 ± 2.8 nM GSH) on April 1st, while their concentration was lower in the corresponding ULW samples, indicating possible atmospheric impact via deposition of various aerosols such as pollen and/or BB in the SML. Moreover, RSS were detected in all SML and ULW samples at Martinska station situated in the Šibenik Bay (in Krka River estuary; Tables 2 and 3), but at higher levels than previously reported for the water column in the upper reach of the Krka River, 56 possibly due to atmospheric impact.…”
