Voltammetric and Scanning Electrochemical Microscopic Studies of the Adsorption Kinetics and Self‐Assembly of n‐Alkanethiol Monolayers on Gold

Abstract: The adsorption kinetics and self-assembly of hexadecyl mercaptan on gold have been investigated by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), chronoamperometry, and cyclic voltammetry. The developed methodology allows one to evaluate the surface coverage and the average size of the defects in the monolayer film from the effective rate constant of electron transfer. Two kinetic regimes of self-assembly were identified: a rapid initial adsorption of hexadecyl mercaptan onto a clean gold surface from 5 mM soluti… Show more

“…UMEs were then electrochemically polished by cycling their potential in a solution of 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . The electrodes were then tested by performing cyclic voltammetry (CV) in a solution of 1 mM ferrocenylmethyltrimethylammonium (FcTMA + ) hexafluorophosphate (FcTMA + · PF 6 − , E = +0.65 V), hereafter FcTMA, which was prepared by the method of Forouzan, et al 71 Pt UMEs capable of reaching an increase in current of 800% (over initial steady state current values) during approach to a 2 mm Pt disc (e.g., those with I T = 8) were used for imaging purposes. Carbon fiber UMEs (cf-UMEs) were manufactured similar to Pt UMEs except using 7 μm carbon fibers gifted by Dr. Aurelio Galli (Vanderbilt University).…”
