Voltage stability monitoring using sensitivities computed from synchronized phasor measurement data

Abstract: Abstract-Wide-area early warning systems are dependent on synchrophasor data-based applications for providing timely information to operators so that preventive actions can be taken. This article proposes the use of voltage sensitivities computed from syncrhophasor data for voltage stability monitoring, and a visualization approach that can be implemented in wide-area early warning systems. In order to provide reliable information, synchrophasor data must be pre-processed to extract only the useful features em… Show more

“…However, the practical utility of online dQ/dV is during the time when significant and sustained reactive power and voltage trends are present in the measurements. Influence of measurement noise on online sensitivity calculation is handled in [17] using a moving average filtering technique. In this work, we show that due to superior noise-rejection capabilities of the piecewise-linear trend model, further improvement can be achieved.…”

“…Calculation of PV and QV sensitivities is another classical VSA methodology. Using an appropriate data-filtering technique, they can also be computed from PMU data directly, as demonstrated in [17].…”

“…In addition, WAMS performances and applications are continuously improving as a result of intensive ongoing research and development. A lot of research is being carried out to exploit synchrophasor in applications like power oscillation detection and damping [4] [5], voltage stability monitoring [6], power system protection [7] [8], etc.…”
