Voltage profile and THD distortion of residential network with high penetration of Plug-in Electrical Vehicles

Abstract: This paper analyzes the potential impacts of Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) on the voltage profile, losses, power quality and daily load curve of low voltage residential network. PEVs are soon expected to grow in popularity as a low emission mode of transport compared to conventional petroleum based vehicles. Utilities are concerned about the potential detrimental impacts that multiple domestic PEV charging may have on network equipment (e.g., transformer and cable stresses). To address these issues, two cha… Show more

“…[12]; this can cause adverse impacts on reliability, security, and efficiency of the power grid. Previous studies carried out in [10,[12][13][14] find the impact on harmonics due to the integration of EVs; however, these studies do not consider WGs in the network which has potentials to reduce THDs if operated in coordination with the EVs. In [15], EVs and WGs are considered to demonstrate their impacts on voltage THDs but without considering the possible coordinated operations of EVs and WGs to reduce THDs.…”

“…For EV charging solutions, most prior efforts can be classified into "scenario analysis" [1] [2] [3] [4], which focus on impact of EVs on peak power demand, low voltage problems etc. Results of scenario analyses studies have been used to develop "charging solutions" [5] [6].…”
