Voltage Noise in Limulus Visual Cells

Abstract: Intracellular recordings from Limulus eccentric cells suggest that the generator potential arises from the superposition of numerous discrete fluctuations in membrane conductance. If this is so, a relation between frequency response to flickering light and noise characteristics under steady light may be predicted. This prediction is verified experimentally. If a discrete fluctuation model is assumed, the data indicate that increased light has two major effects: (i) the discrete events are strongly light-adapte… Show more

“…The procedure has been described in detail earlier (Dodge, Knight, and Toyota, 1968;Roebroek, van Tjonger, and Stavenga, 1990;Suss-Toby et al, 1991). Shortly, assuming a bump shape given by the F-distribution: F(t;n,'r) n!…”

“…Method 1 is insensitive to the presence of a filter (for instance a screening pigment) interposed between the light source and the membrane, provided the density of the filter is the same when low-and high-intensity stimuli are presented. Since the number of quantal events can be estimated from the response noise (Dodge et al, 1968), Method 1 should be applicable even in cells which produce no observable discrete waves.…”

“…Notice that if we have an ensemble of many trials with the same input, then we can define a different "fluctuation" in the signal ρ by subtracting off the time dependent mean ρ(t) = λ(t). Thus if we write ∆ρ(t) = ρ(t) − λ(t), then the equations analogous to (11) and (12) above are as follows:…”

“…Because single photon responses are more or less standardized it seems a good idea to model the photoreceptor voltage as a shot noise process, consisting of a stream of photon induced events often referred to as "quantum bumps" (Dodge et al 1968, Wong et al 1980, de Ruyter van Steveninck and Laughlin 1996a,b). However, we are dealing with a highly adaptive system.…”
