This paper describes a general theory for the characteristics of voltage-induction-type electrostatic motors (VITEMs). VITEMs are one of macro-scale electrostatic film motors with multi-phase electrodes on both the sliders and the stators. The motor drives synchronously without voltage feeding wires to its slider due to the indirect power supply using electrostatic induction. Although the numbers of electrode phases can be chosen arbitrary to realize the motor, the characteristics of the motors were analyzed only for two specific cases in the previous studies. This work extends the previously proposed theories so that they can handle a general case, in which the slider and the stator have m-and n-phase electrodes with arbitrary numbers for m and n. The theory can estimate the optimized thrust force performance for any electrode configurations, when given fundamental parameters regarding the capacitance coefficients of the motor, which can be obtained either experimentally or numerically. Using the proposed theory, several different configurations of VITEMs are analyzed and compared, in terms of thrust force performance. The results indicate that electrode thickness considerably affects the thrust force performance of VITEMs, which is not the case for other synchronous electrostatic film motors, and thus suggest that the design of VITEMs should more carefully consider the three-dimensional structure of the electrodes.

This paper proposes an analytical method for dynamic-transient modeling of a variable capacitance energy conversion system as a multi-layer synchronous machine. The dynamic-transient models are achieved based on the analytical formulas and are valid for all machine structures with flat electrode plates. In addition, the equivalent circuits and operational characteristics are obtained for both dynamic-transient and steady-state conditions. The analytical model is evaluated and well verified through both experimental test results and computer-aided numerical methods such as finite element analysis (FEA). The numerical 3D-FEA simulations are performed using Ansys Maxwell 3D software. Design and manufacturing of the experimental prototype are performed using printed circuit board (PCB) technology. The variable capacitance machines (VCMs) have a low weight and volume, and fast transient response.The results show that the electrical current level of the VCMs is very low which can be effective in reducing electrical losses. In addition, regarding the duality between VCMs and magnetic machines, this paper compares some of the features and behaviors of these two groups of energy conversion systems.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have recently enjoyed rapid development due to their easy fabrication, stable outputs, and wide range of applications. By combining conventional textiles with TENGs, textile-based TENGs (t-TENGs) can be employed with wearable devices and smart textiles. The t-TENGs with a yarn structure, triboelectric yarns, can be directly used to conduct energy conversion and be processed into other energy-harvesting textile structures due to their lightweight, flexibility, and processability. This review summarizes the research progress in triboelectric yarns. It starts with a systematic discussion of the working mechanism and manufacturing materials of triboelectric yarns. Subsequently, we discuss the four major methods of constructing triboelectric yarns including twisting/wrapping, coating, electrospinning, and other/composite methods. In particular, details about the energy harvesting performance, the triboelectric yarns' physical properties, and weaving/knitting capability are given. Finally, comments and perspectives are provided for the future design of high-performance triboelectric yarns.
