The paper deals with the problem of how to define and measure welfare, which can be seen either as a part of social policy or as a state of mind. Central to the discussion is the question, whether GDP can be used as a measure of welfare. Descriptive methods are used, besides of statistical estimations. A sample of authors which discuss the relation between GDP and welfare are presented. Keywords: welfare, gross domestic product, human development index, correlations and regressions of welfare variables, international comparison of countries.Straipsnyje nagrinėjama problema, kaip apibrėžti ir išmatuoti gerovę, kuri gali būti suvokiama arba kaip socialinės politikos dalis, arba kaip psichologinė būsena. Pagrindinis diskusijos klausimas yra, ar BVP gali būti taikomas kaip gerovės matas. Be statistinių skaičiavimų naudojami aprašomieji metodai. Pristatomos autorių, kurie svarsto ryšį tarp BVP ir gerovės, nuomonės. Raktiniai žodžiai: gerovė, bendrasis vidaus produktas, žmogaus socialinės raidos indeksas, gerovės kintamųjų koreliacijos ir regresijos, tarptautinis valstybių palyginimas.
