Volcanism‐induced sedimentation and model: A case study of the Upper Jurassic‐Lower Cretaceous sediments in the Liuhe‐Tonghua Basin, NE China

Abstract: Understanding how the lacustrine environment adapts to volcanism and the relevant products is one of the key goals of volcaniclastic sedimentology. Mixed sediments can be deposited in lacustrine basins during the interaction between volcano and environment. This article is focus on the lithology, lithofacies, association, and sedimentary sequence of the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous mixed sediments from the Liuhe-Tonghua Basin, revealing the transportation-accumulation processes of volcanic materials from sub… Show more

“…In recent decades, research on the impact of volcanism on deep-water deposits has blossomed, becoming a focus for both the scientific community and the oil industry (Hiscott et al, 1992(Hiscott et al, , 1993Doubleday et al, 1993;Lirer et al, 2001;Manville et al, 2009;Orme et al, 2015;Tinterri and Tagliaferri, 2015;Di Capua and Groppelli, 2016a, b;Di Capua et al, 2016Gillespie et al, 2019;Dodd et al, 2020;Shi et al, 2020;Zhou et al, 2020;Gallicchio et al, 2023;Yong et al, 2023). Volcanism causes changes in the topography and sediment supply of forearc or back-arc basins, especially in arc systems (Tinterri and Tagliaferri, 2015;Dodd et al, 2020;Gallicchio et al, 2023), as well as complicating the deep-water deposits in the basin, through the input of pyroclastic rocks and particles from other different lithologies from terrains surrounding the volcano (Hiscott et al, 1992(Hiscott et al, , 1993Kimbrough et al, 2001;Di Capua and Groppelli, 2018;Dodd et al, 2020;Gallicchio et al, 2023).…”

“…Mixed depositional systems are defined as depositional systems with both a clastic component (brought about by weathering) and a pyroclastic component (brought about by volcanic activity). There are many examples in northeastern China during the early Cretaceous, including the Xujiaweizi fault depression (Q. S. Cai, Hu, Ngia, & Hu, 2017; Cheng, Wang, Shen, & Ren, 2014; Chi, Yun, Meng, Yin, & Meng, 2002), the Hailaer Basin (Chen, Wu, Zhu, Lin, & Yu, 2007; Cheng et al, 2010; Ji, Meng, Shan, & Zhang, 2011; P. P. Li, Ge, & Zhang, 2010; Zhao et al, 2015), and the Tonghua‐Liuhe Basin (Xue, 1997; Zhou et al, 2020), showing the tectonic‐volcanic events and their influence on sedimentary filling and basin evolution.…”
