Volcanic Landforms and Surface Features

We introduce this atlas with a chapter by the late Arie Poldervaart treating the principal concepts of volcanoes as landforms, followed by a main section of photographs of volcanic structures and features arranged in 198 Plates, and then conclude with an updated glossary of terms associated with volcanology, its processes and products.The atlas is, in a sense, an outgrowth of the expanding interest in volcanology recently stimulated by the exploration of neighboring planetary bodies in the solar system. Ranger, Surveyor, Orbiter, and Apollo photographs have provided strong evidence for the existence of volcanic activity on the Moon. Even the 1965 and 1969 Mariner television pictures sent from Mars suggest that volcanism is not confined to the Earth and its satellite but may be a generally operative planetary process. In anticipation of the ever-increasing need to have improved visual models ofvolcanological features as subsequent landings on the lunar surface take place, photographs of many volcanic landforms and textures have been compiled so as to better interpret high and low altitude and ground photographs of the inner planets, including our Earth as it is resurveyed from space. Because of this emphasis, we are including a few representative photos of this type.However, we recognize that the vast bulk of photographs, and subjects depicted, of volcanological character obtained during this century are strictly earthbound in source, scope, and application. Thus, the photos that we selected to illustrate volcanic features are, of necessity, taken from regions of our own planet, some of which have become classic localities for display of the principal aspects of volcanism.
