Volatiloma analyses of four South African Helichrysum spp. grown in Italy

Abstract: The volatiloma of four Helichrysum species (H. anomalum, H reflexum, H. retortum and H. rugulosum) was analysed here for the first time by GC-MS for a chemotaxonomic contribution to this genus. Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (SHs) prevailed in the aroma profile (VOCs) of H. reflexum, H. rugulosum and H. anomalum (74.7%, 93.6% and 41.6%, respectively), even though the main compounds were different (β-caryophyllene, α-humulene and α-copaene, respectively). The VOCs of H. retortum showed a high percentage of alipha… Show more

“…Fresh and dried flowers were analyzed for their volatile compounds using the Head Space Solide Phase Microextraction (HS-SPME) following the method previously reported by Najar [42]. Briefly, 1 g of each sample was placed in a 25-mL Erlenmeyer flask for 30 min at room temperature (equilibration time).…”

“…By the ending time, the fiber (100 µm polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS, Supelco Ltd., Bellefonte, PA, USA) was exposed in the headspace phase of the samples for 5 min and then transferred to the injector of an Agilent 7890B Gas Chromatograph (Agilent Technologies Inc., Santa Clara, CA, USA) equipped with an Agilent HP-5MS (Agilent Technologies Inc., Santa Clara, CA, USA) capillary column (30 m × 0.25 mm; coating thickness 0.25 µm) and an Agilent 5977B single quadrupole mass detector (Agilent Technologies Inc., Santa Clara, CA, USA). The analytical conditions of the used GC-MS were already reported [42].…”

“…Noteworthy is the appreciable percentage of oxygenated diterpenes in the H. lepidissimum EO (5.6%) with geranyl linalool as unique identified compound. This class of constituent was also found in other Helichrysum species EOs, even though in higher percentages [ 7 , 25 ].…”

“…Two hundred milligrams (mg) of the fresh flowers and 20 mg of the HA and FD flowers were used for the extraction of total polyphenols, flavonoids and anthocyanins, as well as for the radical scavenging activity assays. The flowers were homogenized with methanol 70% in an ice bath and centrifuged for 10 min at 14,000 rpm [30]; the supernatant was recovered and used for the analysis.…”
