Zanthoxylum limoncello is a native plant from southern Mexico which is used as a timber source, condiment and as a traditional medicine. Herein, we report on the volatile content of the leaf essential oil and its biological activities. The annual essential oils (2015-2018) contained volatile organic compounds which exhibited a moderate growth inhibitory activity against H. pylori ATCC 53504 (MIC 121.4-139.7 μg mL À 1 ), 26695 (MIC 85.5 -94.9 μg mL À 1 ) and J99 (MIC 94.7 -110.4 μg mL À 1 ). These hydrodistillates contained 2-undecanone (31.6-36.8 %; MIC 185.3 -199.2 μg mL À 1 ) and 2-undecenal (25.1-35.7 %; MIC 144.8 -111.3 μg mL À 1 ) as the most abundant compounds which were partially involved in the anti-H. pylori activity. The human ornithine decarboxylase enzyme (ODC1), which shows increased activity in several cancer types, was non-competitively inhibited (V max 2.7 > 0.8 K cat s À 1 ) by the essential oil of Z. limoncello as well as by 2-undecanone and 2-undecenal in accordance to in vitro kinetic studies. In silico calculations strongly suggest that the carbonyl group of these oxygenated hydrocarbons interacts with both Asn319 and Ala39 at the subunit A of ODC1. Considering that Ala39 is located close to Asn44, a crucial amino acid of the ODC's allosteric site, the non-competitive inhibition of the enzyme by 2-undecanone and 2-undecenal is endorsed. Finally, the essential oil of Z. limoncello and its main volatiles showed a significant (p < 0.01) and prolonged repellent effect against Aedes aegypti.[a] RI 1 , RI 2 , Retention index obtained with HP-5 ms and Factor Four VF5-ms, respectively. The present work describes the chemical composition of the leaf essential oils from the annual plant Dalea foliolosa, which was collected in three consecutive years (2014-2016). The amount of monoterpenes (69.5-84.6%) was higher to that of sesquiterpenes (10.3-22.9%) and aliphatic hydrocarbons (1-2.1%). Cryptone (22.3-30.6%) was the most abundant oxygenated monoterpene, followed by linalool (10.4-17.6%), caryophyllene oxide (4.6-15.3%), ascaridole (4.5-7.4%) and β-citronellol (3.8-5.6%). The hydrodistillated extract showed antioxidant activity against DPPH radical (IC50, 45-156 µg mL-1), strong anti-α-glucosidase activity (IC50, 14-47 µg mL-1) and inhibited the growth of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci TBR2004 (MIC, 44-105 µg mL-1) and P. syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (MIC, 35-155 µg mL-1). The possible use of the essential oil as a novel additive for anti-hyperglycemic supplements and for the biological control of the analyzed Pseudomonas syringae varieties, may be contemplated.

Variation in Essential Oil Yield and Composition of Dorema aucheri Boiss., an Endemic Medicinal Plant Collected from Wild Populations in Natural Habitats

In the present research, variability in essential oil (EO) composition of five Dorema aucheri populations collected from natural habitats in different regions of Iran, were investigated. The EO content of populations varied from 0.28 to 0.68%. According to gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis, β-caryophyllene (7.17 - 35.73%), thymol (23.45 - 29.64%), β-gurjunene (2.58 - 5.89%), carvacrol (1.32 - 2.67%) and cuparene (1.97 - 2.98%) were the major components. Hierarchical cluster, principal component and canonical correspondence analyses classified the studied populations into three groups based on major EO components. The environmental parameters of the collected sites were also evaluated. According to the results, it might be suggested that sandy soils with high mean annual precipitation were major environmental factors influencing the amount of β-caryophyllene, while thymol, cuparene and caryophyllen oxide increased in silty and clay soils. Finally, the population collected in high altitudes and clay soils had higher amount of β-gurjunene.
