Volar locking plate versus external fixation in distal radius fractures: A meta-analysis

Abstract: The purpose of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the efficacy of plate or external fixator treatments in distal radius fractures, based not only on clinical and radiographic parameters but on Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) parameters. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Metanalyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed when conducting this systematic review. The Revised Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews (RAMSTAR) checklist was additionally consulted in order to ensure a high-qu… Show more

“…Nowadays the most common techniques to reduce the need for transfusion in the orthopedic surgery are based on the use of the tourniquet, 1 minimally invasive surgery, 2,3 diathermo-coagulation and the use of antifibrinolytic agents. 4 In particular a great effort was made to reduce the need for blood transfusion in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) that remain the best surgical treatment for severe knee arthritis.…”

“…In one meta-analysis, the authors found, no difference in terms of functional results at least 1 year follow-up between EF and plate. [ 22 ] Internal and external fixation treatment methods can be applied for the distal radial fractures of types C. The outcomes of these treatment methods have been compared in this study and we found that these methods showed almost no difference of outcome in the long term between EF and VLP; however, VLP showed slightly better results in the earlier period. Considering fracture types, removal times of the EF in our study were similar to those reported in previous studies.…”

“…Regarding the type of lesions: amputations [6], fractures [7], and tendinous lesion [8] rates slightly increased during the pandemic; but in a non-statistically significant manner (p = 0.12).…”
