Vocal learning: Beyond the continuum

Abstract: Vocal learning is the ability to modify vocal output on the basis of experience. Traditionally, species have been classified as either displaying or lacking this ability. A recent proposal, the vocal learning continuum, recognizes the need to have a more nuanced view of this phenotype and abandon the yes-no dichotomy. However, it also limits vocal learning to production of novel calls through imitation, moreover subserved by a forebrain-to-phonatorymuscles circuit. We discuss its limitations regarding the char… Show more

“…We contend that vocal learning may be based on a variety of different mechanisms, including vocal convergence, 'learning from success', a form of usage learning that comprises the use of specific call variants because they are more likely to yield the desired response, as well as the spontaneous imitation of a recently formed auditory template [42]. Instead of conceiving vocal learning capacities as a continuum [43], we agree with other authors that vocal learning may be supported by a variety of different mechanisms [44]. Future studies should aim to distinguish between these mechanisms, and also consider the effect size of vocal plasticity.…”

“…In this paper, we have aimed to build on the strong foundations of Janik & Slater [2,3], Petkov & Jarvis [4], Tyack [5] and others (e.g. [6][7][8][9][10]) to define a framework for understanding vocal learning across species. We contrasted non-learned vocal variation with vocal usage and vocal production learning.…”
