Objectives:To study the interaction of puerperal women who have postpartum depression and to understand the perception of family about the disease and maternal care provided by these mothers. Methods: This is an exploratory and qualitative study which had as a subject of study four puerperal women (with postpartum depression, being followed at the Psychosocial Care Center in the municipality of Quixada, state of Ceara) and four relatives. Home visits were made to carry out the interviews. The data were analyzed according to the content analysis technique proposed by Morse and Field. Results: The main changes reported were emotional easy-tears and nervousness. The puerperal women were frustrated and/or lacking confidence in the exercise of motherhood. To make matters worse it was observed that the families were unaware of the postpartum depression problem. Conclusion: Nursing care in this situation should begin assessing the prenatal self-esteem, the received social support from the network and the mother satisfaction. RESUMO Objetivo:Conhecer a interação de puérperas, que apresentam depressão pós-parto, com seus filhos e compreender a percepção de familiares sobre a doença e cuidados maternos prestados por essas puérperas. Métodos: Estudo qualitativo de caráter exploratório que teve como sujeitos do estudo quatro puérperas com depressão pós-parto, acompanhadas em um Centro de Atenção Psicossocial do município de Quixadá -CE e quatro familiares. Foram realizadas visitas domiciliárias para a execução de entrevistas em profundidade. Os dados foram analisados conforme a técnica de análise de conteúdo proposta por Morse e Field. Resultados: As principais alterações emocionais relatadas foram o choro fácil e nervosismo. As puérperas sentiam-se frustradas e/ou inseguras quanto ao exercício da maternidade. Como agravante foi observado que familiares desconheciam o problema da depressão pós-parto. Conclusão: O cuidado de enfermagem nessa situação deve começar no pré-natal com avaliação da auto-estima, da rede de suporte social e da satisfação das futuras mães. RESUMO:Estudo descritivo, transversal, com abordagem quantitativa, cujo objetivo foi conhecer o perfil socioeconômico e obstétrico de puérperas assistidas em uma maternidade ao norte do Espírito Santo. Cerca de 54% das mulheres estavam na faixa etária de 20 a 29 anos, 83,6% eram casadas ou viviam com parceiro, 49,5% declararam-se pardas, 32,8% possuíam ensino médio completo, 49,8% tinham renda de até um salário mínimo, 61,6% pertenciam à classe C e 89,2% foram atendidas pelo Sistema Único de Saúde. Verificou-se que 72,4% tiveram de uma a duas gestações, 53,9% com intervalo interpartal de 2 a 5 anos, 62,2% com parto cesárea, cerca de 60% realizaram sete consultas ou mais de pré-natal e 87% negaram histórico de abortamento. Conclui-se que o perfil de puérperas é semelhante ao encontrado em outros estudos e evidencia-se a necessidade do serviço estar atento à não realização do pré-natal entre puérperas jovens e alta prevalência de parto cesárea. SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND OBSTETRIC PROFILE OF PUERPERAE ASSISTED IN A PHILANTHROPIC MATERNITY UNITABSTRACT: The aim of this descriptive, cross-sectional and qualitative study was to investigate the socio-economic and obstetric profile of puerperae assisted in a maternity unit in the North of Espírito Santo. Approximately 54% of the women were in the age range 20 to 29 years old, 83.6% were married or lived with a partner, 49.5% stated that they were of mixed race, 32.8% had finished junior high school, 49.8% had an income of not more than one minimum salary, 61.6% belong to social class C and 89.2% were attended by the Unified Health System (SUS). It was ascertained that 72.4% had had one to two pregnancies, 53.9% with an interpartal interval of 2 to 5 years, 62.2% with Caesarean section, approximately 60% had had seven or more pre-natal consultations and 87% denied having a history of miscarriage. It is concluded that the profile of puerperae is similar to that found in other studies and the need is evidenced for the service to be attent to the non-undertaking of pre-natal consultations among young puerperae and the high prevalence of Caesarean births. Background: Women's health is a topic which is being focused on by public health policies in Brazil; discussions are increasingly expanding and receiving special attention. There are numerous campaigns and actions developed on the importance of preventive screening before birth as well as humanization of childbirth and breastfeeding. Objective: to identify the needs of mothers regarding postpartum nursing care. Method:Qualitative research Convergent Care type held with mothers in a city of Santa Catarina -Brazil. Twenty-three semi-structured interviews took place during October 2012. Results:Postpartum is an important moment on women life. Women's need adapt in the new conditions as mother and describes some experiences and difficulties such feel physically tired, have pain, difficulties to breastfeeding, problems to conciliate work and newborn. The participants related that received more physicians' assistance than nurse assistance. Conclusion:Puerperium causes sudden changes in women's lives; the transition from being pregnant to being a mother is sometimes a difficult period, which demands maternal adaptation, requiring physical and emotional balance. It is important that nurses are aware of the difficulties and needs of these women, in order to provide qualified midwifery attention.
