“…Linear regression analyses, based on reflectance data points on either side of the coalification jump, were used to determine the equations for converting volatile matter content into calculated vitrinite reflectance values (R c ). Measured vitrinite reflectance values are from Kelso and Rushworth (1982), Rice (1983), Roybal and others (1985), Rice and others (1989), Fassett and Nuccio (1990), Law (1990b), and this study. Volatile matter contents are from Fassett and Hinds (1971), others, 1979, Roybal andothers (1985), Kelso and others (1988), Nickelson (1988), andRoberts (1989).…”

“…Humate is found throughout the Menefee, both in association with coal beds and in the so called 'barren' parts of the formation (Shomaker and Hiss, 1974;Siemers and Wadell, 1977). Humate is dark-brown to brownish-gray mudstone that contains abundant wood and plant material and was deposited in moderately to poorly drained swamps that received an abundant influx of clay and organic matter (Siemers and Wadell, 1977 show vitrinite reflectance (R m ) values, in percent, contoured using data from Fassett and Nuccio (1990), Law (1992), and Ridgley (2001b). Also shown are locations of the wells (green triangles) used to construct the burial history curves found in this report (figs.…”

“…1) (Fassett and Nuccio, 1990; C. Threlkeld, U.S Geological Survey, written commun., 2001). These data indicate that the Dakota-lower Mancos and Menefee strata had a similar thermal history in the southern part of the central basin, but a higher thermal history for the Dakota-lower Mancos relative to the Menefee north of this area (Rice, 1983).…”

“…San Juan Basin coals, depending on the age and location within the basin, have been buried from 1000 to 4000 ft deep, with the depth of burial increasing to the north. Vitrinite reflectance measured on the deeper Fruitland and Menefee coals ranges from 0.5 to 1.45% (Rice, 1983;Fassett and Nuccio, 1990) and tends to show some increase in rank with depth and toward the northern part of the basin, in the vicinity of the San Juan volcanic complex.…”
