Vitiligo associated with other autoimmune diseases: polyglandular autoimmune syndrome types 3B + C and 4

Abstract: Vitiligo is a common skin disease characterized by depigmented maculae resulting from a reduction of the number and function of melanocytes. Many studies suggest that vitiligo might be an autoimmune disease. Vitiligo has been frequently described in association with other autoimmune diseases. Among the diseases described in association with vitiligo are the so-called autoimmune polyglandular syndromes (APS). Vitiligo can be present in all types of APS but the most frequent association appears to be in APS-3. A… Show more

“…Vitiligonun Addison hastalığı, otoimmün tiroidit, pernisiyöz anemi, SLE, diabetes mellitus, alopesi ariata gibi otoimmün hastalıklarla birlikteliği sık olmakla birlikte, otoimmün tiroiditlerle iliş-kisi en sık bilinenidir. [8][9][10][11] Otoimmün tiroiditlerin prevalansı normal populasyonda %10 olup, vitiligolu olgularda %30'a çıkmaktadır. 12 Kortikosteroidlerin tedavide etkin olması da otoimmün zemini desteklemektedir.…”

“…Testing results for other autoimmune conditions, including type 1 diabetes mellitus, Addison disease, Celiac disease, and Graves disease, were all negative. With our patient having autoimmune thyroiditis in addition to one other organ-specific autoimmune condition, she has autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 3, specifically type 3C, based on the existence of thyroid autoimmunity along with involvement of the central nervous system (ocular myasthenia gravis) [15]. …”

“…5 The association of autoimmune thyroid disease with vitiligo and/or alopecia and/or other neuromuscular or nervous system autoimmune disease in the absence of adrenal insufficiency is classified as autoimmune polyglandular syndrome-3C (APS-3C). 6 We report here an interesting case of APS-3C in an elderly male with longstanding vitiligo who developed both euthyroid ophthalmopathy and isolated OMG.…”
