“…A case–control study from Scandinavia determined there was an increased incidence of RA for those determined to have had a stressful life event within the past year compared to osteoarthritis controls, although the retrospective nature of this study is a methodological limitation [22]. It has been demonstrated recently that mental disorders such as depression can increase the risk of another inflammatory arthropathy, psoriatic arthritis [23], as well as other autoimmune diseases including inflammatory bowel disease [24], alopecia areata [25], and vitiligo [26] among others [27], thus further supporting the temporal nature of these inflammatory relationships.…”

“…12 Another cohort study following incident vitiligo (7104 individuals) and referent (6 137 696 individuals) cohorts until the development of MDD demonstrated that patients with vitiligo diagnoses had a 27% increased risk for MDD than those without vitiligo (crude HR, 1.27 [95% CI, 1.16-1.40]; P < 0.001). 13 Our study introduced the incidence rate of these psychological comorbidities with adjusted HR of 3.845 (P < 0.001) for anxiety and 3.721 (P < 0.001) for depression. Besides, we emphasized the increased risk of OCD, manic disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in patients with vitiligo which are rarely discussed.…”

“…A meta‐analysis of 29 studies with 2530 people with vitiligo comprehensively observed that pooled prevalence for clinically diagnosed depression and anxiety was 0.21 (95% CI, 0.15–0.28) and 0.15 (95% CI 0.06–0.24), respectively . Another cohort study following incident vitiligo (7104 individuals) and referent (6 137 696 individuals) cohorts until the development of MDD demonstrated that patients with vitiligo diagnoses had a 27% increased risk for MDD than those without vitiligo (crude HR, 1.27 [95% CI, 1.16–1.40]; P < 0.001) . “…Diseases such as alopecia areata and vitiligo have been found to have a bidirectional relationship with depression in large scale cohort studies. [ 25 26 ] A systematic review of 35 studies found that chronic pruritus that is unresponsive to topical treatment and oral antihistamines will benefit from oral antidepressants (fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline, amitriptyline, nortriptyline, doxepin, and mirtazapine). [ 27 ] Indications for antidepressants are outlined in Table 7 .…”
