“…In O. quadrata, the acidophilic cytoplasm of mature oocytes can be attributed to the presence of large yolk granules in the periphery of the oocytes and smaller granules near the nuclei, as earlier reported in other crustaceans (López et al, '97;Peixoto et al, 2002;Dalabona and Silva, 2005). These acidophilic granules in the cytoplasm of mature oocytes showed positive PAS staining after amylase treatment, suggesting that, as in other crustaceans, the egg yolk is probably a glycolipoprotein (Kim et al, 2004;Okumura et al, 2007). This also suggests that, as described for males, this reserve is not used during vitellogenesis, but is spared to be used during embryonic development.…”

“…In female Cherax quadricarinatus, for example, the main circulating HDL is vitellogenin (Abdu et al, 2002). Depending on the species, vitellogenin can be synthesized in the hepatopancreas, ovaries, or both (Okumura et al, 2007), transported to the ovaries by receptor-mediated endocytosis (Mak et al, 2005), and once inside the ovaries, it is cleaved, forming lipovitellin subunits (Oberdörster et al, 2000;Okumura et al, 2007). Lipovitellin, in turn, is the major component of the egg yolk of most marine invertebrates (Komatsu and Ando, '92;Mak et al, 2005;Walker et al, 2006).…”

“…One of the authors of this monograph determined that eyestalk ablation-removal of the source of CHH-increased CRP and MjTSP protein levels but did not affect their mRNA levels in the ovary of Mar. japonicus (Okumura et al 2007). Taken together with the fact that SOP, CRP, and MjTSP genes are transcribed and translated at different oocyte stages, these results indicate that expression of these genes is controlled at the translational level by CHH-family peptides.…”

“…This process has been histologically investigated in several crustacean species (for reviews, see Charniaux-Cotton and Payen 1988; Meusy and Payen 1988). One of the authors of this monograph has also studied ovarian development in relation to reproductive season and molt cycle in representative prawn species (Okumura et al 1992(Okumura et al , 2007Okumura and Aida 2000).…”
