In female insects, the steroid hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) plays a major role in activating vitellogenesis, a process required for egg development. By contrast with vertebrates, production of large amounts of hormonal steroids has not been reported in adult male insects. In the present study, we analyzed steroidogenesis in both male and female adult of the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae and we found that A. gambiae male mosquitoes produce high amounts of the steroid hormone 20E. Importantly, we found that male accessory glands, but not testes, are the source of 20E. Moreover, this steroid hormone is stored in male accessory glands and delivered to females during mating. These findings suggest that male 20E may not act as a true male sex steroid, but more likely as an allohormone. Our results give new insights into speciesspecific physiological processes that govern the reproductive success of the malaria mosquito. This could thus lead to the identification of new target genes for manipulating male and/or female reproductive success, a promising way to reduce or eliminate mosquito population and therefore to control malaria transmission.allohormone ͉ ecdysteroids ͉ malaria ͉ male accessory glands ͉ mosquito

Oocyte development in the ovary of the black cricket, Melanogryllus desertus, was investigated. In the panoistic ovary of M. desertus, oocyte developmental stages based on their histological properties were classified as previtellogenic, vitellogenic, and maturation. Oocytes were encircled by follicle cells through the developmental stages. In the previtellogenic stage, a few vacuoles were observed just beneath the oolemma. At the beginning of the vitellogenic stage, subdivided into early-, middle-, and late-vitellogenic stages, yolk granules within the oocyte were initially observed just beneath the oolemma. In addition, small lipid droplets were initially present under the yolk granules. As vitellogenesis proceeded, both yolk granules and lipid droplets gradually increased and moved inside the oocyte. The Balbiani body was detected around the nucleus. In the maturation stage, large yolk granules covering the whole of the oocytes were determined. Some atretic oocytes occurring as a result of resorption of oocytes (oosorption) by hypertrophied follicle cells were also detected. Apoptosis in atretic follicles was observed as well.

Eupelmus vuilleti (Hymenoptera; Eupelmidae) is a solitary ectoparasitoid producing yolk-rich eggs. The female oviposits mainly on the fourth larval instar of Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera; Bruchidae), which develop within pods and seeds of Vigna unguiculata (Fabacae). Parasitoid females are synovigenic, i.e., they are born with immature eggs and need to feed from the host to sustain egg production during their entire lifetime. However, eggs are rapidly resorbed in unfavourable conditions and an efficient stop-and-go mechanism controls oogenesis in such animals. In this study, the possible involvement of ecdysteroids in the regulation of parasitoid oogenesis is examined. In a first step, the identity and titre of ecdysteroids in reproductively active and inactive female parasitoids were investigated by high performance liquid chromatography followed by enzyme immuno-assay (EIA/HPLC). A larger secretion of ecdysone was found in female during their reproductive period compared with inactive females. In a second step, both the secretion of ecdysteroids into the medium of in vitro incubated ovaries and the ecdysteroid content of females reared with or without host were measured (EIA). The presence of the host, which represents both the oviposition site and the nutritional source, induced an active biosynthesis of ecdysone. This synthesis started at a slow rate after host introduction and reached a maximum after 48 h. When hosts were available, this synthesis was cyclic and continuous during the entire female lifetime. These results showed that host presence triggered ovarian synthesis of ecdysteroids, which are involved in a stop-and-go regulation of egg production linked to host availability.
