Abstract: Congenital vitelline duct anomalies other than Meckel’s diverticulum are rare in animals. A cyst of approximately 8 mm in diameter was observed on the antimesenteric surface of the ileal serosa in a 10-week-old female Crl:CD(SD) rat. Microscopically, the cyst closely resembled the ileum, but it did not communicate with the ileal lumen. BackgroundMesodiverticular bands (MDBs) are an embryonic remnant of the vitelline artery. Information about the clinical significance of equine MDBs is currently limited.ObjectivesTo report the clinical features, surgical findings and outcomes of horses undergoing exploratory laparotomy where a MDB was identified.Study designRetrospective case series.MethodsCase records of horses undergoing exploratory laparotomy for colic over a 14‐year period (2009–2022) were reviewed. MDBs identified at laparotomy were classified as the primary or contributory cause of abdominal pain, or as incidental.ResultsMDBs were identified in 40/1943 horses (2.1%) and 15 were primary (32.5%), 10 contributory (25%) and 15 incidental (32.5%). Horses with primary MDBs (median 2 years, IQR 1–12) were significantly younger than horses with incidental MDBs (median 8 years, IQR 6–16; P = 0.01). MDBs were more likely to be incidental if located in the mid‐jejunum (5/5) (P < 0.001) or where a mesenteric pocket was absent (11/15) (P = 0.01). Primary MDBs caused extra‐mural obstruction due to mesenteric shortening (n = 4), small intestinal entrapment within the MDB pocket (n = 5) or in an adjacent mesenteric rent (n = 4), and volvulus around the MDB (n = 2), with intestinal resection required in 8/15 cases. For horses with primary MDBs, survival to hospital discharge was 60% overall (9/15) and 75% for horses that stood following anaesthesia (9/12) with 88.9% of cases discharged from hospital (8/9) surviving >1 year. Excision of MDB tissue was not associated with complications but 3/4 non‐incidental MDBs left in situ required relaparotomy to treat MDB‐associated colic.Main limitationsRetrospective single centre data.ConclusionsMost MDBs in horses undergoing surgical treatment of colic in this population were not incidental. MDB‐associated colic was most commonly classified as strangulating obstruction, but non‐strangulating extra‐mural compression was also identified. Excision of MDB tissue should be undertaken where possible, particularly in non‐incidental cases.

Meckel's diverticulum in animals and birds: An immuno-pathoclinical perspective

Background: Meckel’s diverticulum (MD), also known as vitelline diverticulum, is a congenital anomaly found in animals and birds as an appendage of the small intestine with immuno-pathoclinical significance. Methods: The author used PubMed and Medline search engines for articles containing terms such as Meckel's diverticulum, animals, birds, histopathology, complications and immune functions. From the abstracts of those articles, relevant articles were selected and reviewed them in detail. All the relevant major review articles and trials were included. The articles, which were available in full text English language, were selected. Additional articles were identified by a manual search of the references from the reviewed articles. Results: MD is a vestigial remnant of the omphalomesenteric duct. MD is most commonly found in horses and swine and less common in ruminants, carnivores and aves. The gross morphology and location on small intestine varies species to species. Hereditary, breed, age and sex are the factors that influence the occurrence of MD in animals. Histologically the wall of the diverticulum is of the same construction as the small intestinal wall (mucosa, submucosa, muscular and serosa coats) with a few exceptions like lack of villi and has a large amount of aggregated lymphoid follicles in its tunica mucosae, and also its muscularis mucosae. MD is a novel lymphoepithelial organ in the birds because of its high amount of lymphoid tissue. It produces large number of plasma cells which are comparable to those of the gland of Harder. MD is not generally of great clinical importance, but it is occasionally involved in several pathoclinical complications like recurrent colic from impaction, the development of peritoneal adhesions and strangulations in animals. Conclusion: The information included in the review regarding the development, prevalence, morphology, immunological and pathoclinical significance of Meckel’s diverticulum is supportive to prevent complications which will result in morbidity and mortality in animals and birds.
