Vitamin supplement use and risk for breast cancer: the Shanghai Breast Cancer Study

Abstract: Objective: The influence of vitamin supplements on risk for breast cancer is unclear. Also the interactive effects of vitamins from dietary and supplemental sources are unknown. This study investigated the association between self-reported vitamin supplement use (A, B, C, E and multivitamin) and breast cancer among urban Chinese women. It also examined the combined effect of vitamin supplements in relation to particular dietary vitamin intakes on breast cancer risk. Methods: Study subjects were identified from … Show more

“…Maybe vitamin E has an effect only in Fig. 3 The funnel plots for the associations between total retinol (a), total vitamin A (b), total vitamin C (c), total vitamin E (d), and breast cancer combination with other dietary components, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids [68], or that a vitamin E supplement may confer protection against breast cancer among women with insufficient dietary intake of vitamin E [18].…”

“…Similar results were found in two case-control studies reported by Longnecker et al [40] and Rohan et al [38]. On the contrary, a case-control study by Dorjgochoo et al [44] found a not significant increased risk (OR = 1.20; 95% CI: 0.80–1.60) for the longest supplemental use.…”

“…In the Shanghai Breast Cancer Study, Dorjgochoo et al [44] evaluated the consumption of vitamin B1, B2, and niacin supplementation, but the results did not support a relationship with breast cancer incidence for the use of supplements (user versus non-user, duration, and frequency of supplementation).…”

“…The major impact of experimental animal studies was distinct observations of reduced cancer cell growth by nutraceutical intervention and it supported the role of nutraceuticals in cancer prevention and treatment. The major examples of breast cancer preventive nutraceuticals are soy genestein [122][123][124], isoflavones, multivitamins as scavengers of free radicals, antioxidant, mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation [125][126][127][128][129][130][131][132].…”
