Vitamin K in COVID-19—Potential Anti-COVID-19 Properties of Fermented Milk Fortified with Bee Honey as a Natural Source of Vitamin K and Probiotics

Abstract: Vitamin K deficiency is evident in severe and fatal COVID-19 patients. It is associated with the cytokine storm, thrombotic complications, multiple organ damage, and high mortality, suggesting a key role of vitamin K in the pathology of COVID-19. To support this view, we summarized findings reported from machine learning studies, molecular simulation, and human studies on the association between vitamin K and SARS-CoV-2. We also investigated the literature for the association between vitamin K antagonists (VKA… Show more

“…It is worth mentioning that data from our English-speaking participants were collected before the COVID-19 pandemic while data were obtained from the Ghanian sample during the COVID-19 outbreak. This period has witnessed an inflation in the rates of negative emotions all over the world ( Ali et al, 2021e ). Although there is no clear explanation for invariance of the DASS-8/DASS-12 across English-speaking and Ghanian respondents in the present study, criterion validity tests indicate that this finding can be attributed to cultural differences—higher vertical individualism in the English-speaking samples.…”

“…Depression and anxiety disorders are commonly occurring conditions that are frequently comorbid with several mental and physical disorders ( Lovibond and Lovibond, 1995 ; Vignola and Tucci, 2014 ). They frequently result from genetic, nutritional, psychosocial (e.g., childhood trauma), and systemic inflammatory and oxidative stress factors (e.g., COVID-19 infection; Ali et al, 2021e ). They have several symptoms in common.…”

“…Moreover, LAB exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects; they represent a common form of probiotics. Apart from Se treatment, LAB metabolites promote the growth of beneficial bacteria and discourage the growth of pathogenic species [124]. Compared with the wild type, Se-enriched LAB caused extensive damage in the membrane of pathogenic Salmonella typhimurium, E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Listeria monocytogenes in fermented pickles [123].…”

“…Social distancing, primarily being locked down at home has been adopted in most countries as the most protective strategy against COVID-19. However, this strategy may cause several negative physical and psychological problems such as obesity, depression and domestic violence (18)(19)(20). For largesize families, especially with children under the age of 18 years, prolonged exposure to human sounds within the context of home confinement may cause excessive sensory input, sense of crowding-especially in small-size households, and lack of privacy leading to detrimental effects on health and well-being (21,22).…”
