Vitamin E Supplementation Decreases Lung Virus Titers in Mice Infected with Influenza

Abstract: Effects of vitamin E (E) supplementation on influenza infection were examined in young and old C57BL/6NIA mice fed 30 or 500 ppm of E for 6 weeks and subsequently infected with influenza A/Port Chalmers/1/73 (H3N2). Old mice fed 30 ppm of E had significantly higher lung virus titers on days 2 and 7 after infection than young mice fed 30 ppm of E. Titers on all 3 days were significantly lower in old mice fed 500 ppm of E than in those fed 30 ppm. Significant effects of E on lung virus titers in young mice were … Show more

“…This possibility is supported by studies conducted in laboratory animals. Hayek et al (125) fed young and old mice either 30 or 500 parts per million (ppm) vitamin E for 8 weeks, at which time they were infected with influenza virus. Old mice fed 30 ppm of vitamin E had higher viral titres than young mice fed the same way.…”

“…Vitamin E supplementation (125,126) has also been shown to reduce lung viral titres following influenza infection. The evidence thus far suggests that improved immune response following nutrient intervention might have clinical significance for this age group.…”

“…In contrast, we observed significant myocarditis in adult mice infected with CVB3͞ 0 Old compared with mice infected with CVB3͞0 (P Ͻ 0.05) (Fig. 1C) (2). Heart pathology observed in adult mice infected with CVB3͞0 Old was comparable with myocarditis observed after infection with the virulent CVB3͞20 ( Fig.…”
