Vitamin E-Coated Dialyzer Inhibits Oxidative Stress

Abstract: Aim: To examine the effects of vitamin E-coated dialyzer on oxidative stress in vitro. Methods: A dialyzer with a synthetic polymer membrane (APS-11SA) and vitamin E-coated dialyzer (VPS-11SA) were connected to a blood tubing line, and U937 cells were circulated in the device. The circulating fluid was collected at 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, and 50 cycles, which are estimated numbers of passes through the dialyzer. Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, malondialdehyde (MDA), and Cu/Zn-superoxide dismut… Show more

“…In order to overcome this problem, antioxidative and biocompatible HD materials exemplified by the vitamin E-coated dialyzer have been developed. ( 15 17 ) However, despite the numerous advances in HD dialyzers, the prognosis of HD patients remains unsatisfactory, especially those with diabetes mellitus (DM), a disease that promotes a highly oxidative state. ( 18 )…”

“…In order to overcome this problem, antioxidative and biocompatible HD materials exemplified by the vitamin E-coated dialyzer have been developed. (15)(16)(17) However, despite the numerous advances in HD dialyzers, the prognosis of HD patients remains unsatisfactory, especially those with diabetes mellitus (DM), a disease that promotes a highly oxidative state. (18) These concerns are partly due to the fact that the details of widely varied and complexed in vivo oxidative stress-related reactions have not been sufficiently analyzed.…”

“…Consequently, polysulfone-based vitamin E-bonded membranes were developed [4-8] to achieve a synergistic effect of the biocompatibility of synthetic membranes and the antioxidant activity of vitamin E. This clinical study was designed to evaluate the vitamin E-bonded polysulfone hemodialyzer, ViE™-21, manufactured by Asahi Kasei Medical Co., Ltd., at a clinical site in Canada to obtain performance and safety data for regulatory submission.…”

“…Other researchers found that gamma-tocopherol is a detoxifier of peroxynitrile radicals. More recent in vitro studies found that vitamin E-coated dialysis membranes reduce intracellular ROS in monocytes and maintain normal activity of Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase [4,[10][11][12].…”
