Vitamin deficiencies and prevention methods after bariatric surgery

Abstract: Bariatric surgeries have proven to be an effective treatment for morbid obesity to reduce the excess body weight of the individuals. Besides weight loss and improvement in metabolic parameters, bariatric surgery procedures can also cause some complications. “…Nonetheless, a substantial proportion of patients undertaking gastric sleeve surgery had low levels of vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, iron, and ferritin, highlighting the necessity of monitoring and managing these laboratory markers. These results are consistent with previous reports [ 13 - 16 ] indicating that patients who have undergone gastric sleeve surgery frequently experience dietary deficiencies. Possible causes of deteriorating laboratory results include insufficient dietary intake, malabsorption, and inadequate supplementation [ 17 ].…”

“…A BS could cause intestinal malabsorption of the vitamin B complex due to the involvement of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum in vitamin absorption [ 26 ]. According to Calapkorur and Küçükkatirci [ 27 ], the prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency increased to 61.8% five years after the RYGB operation. An analysis of 75 patients followed for a longer period and without supplementation revealed that 61.8% had low vitamin B12 levels [ 28 ].…”
