“…As shown in Table 1, we did not find significant association of ESCC cases with alcohol consumption and smoking status in the current study, which is consistent with many previously published studies in China, including studies for liver cancer, as well as studies conducted in the same area for esophageal cancer [5, 40, 62, 63]. The major reasons for lack of such association are the prevalence of alcohol drinking (nearly 100% in the study participants) and the nature of the matched case-control design.…”

“…Based on the results, high level exposure to AFB 1 and FB 1 were associated with increased risk to ESCC, and greater-than-additive interaction exists between high AFB 1 and FB 1 exposure. The overall dietary patterns and staple food have not been changed for decades in the study area and populations [5, 19, 40], despite of possible periodic variations; therefore, measurement for biomarker levels are reflective of both the current and past exposures, which might be even higher than the currently measured exposure levels.…”

“…However, the primary risk factor that increases the risk of ESCC/EPL in one population may not be significantly associated with this cancer in another. As reported in previous studies, alcohol use and tobacco smoking, which are the established risk factors for ESCC in other areas, play only a minor role in Huai'an District, whereas the factors such as low consumption of fruits and vegetables, frequent consumption of high-temperature food or beverages, high dietary exposure to nitrite, deficiency of certain nutrients, genetic polymorphism, as well as the exposure to mycotoxins including AFB 1 , have been found to play important roles in the process of carcinogenesis of ESCC in this region [5,19,20,28,[34][35][36][37][38][39]. Further studies will be needed to confirm these findings, explore other potential factors and evaluate the possible interaction among the established factors on ESCC development in the studied population in Huai'an District so that the prevention strategies for ESCC/EPL can be improved.…”

“…Briefly, 200 ul skin homogenate solution was added into 1 mL methanol with vortex for 30s. And then 1 mL of hexane was added to extract VD 3 under oscillation mixture for 2 min [18]. The mixture was centrifuged at 2000 rpm for 5 min to separate supernatant fluid.…”
