Vitamin D—The Nutritional Status of Post-Gastrectomy Gastric Cancer Patients—Systematic Review

Abstract: Gastric cancer is a malignant neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract, with one of the standard treatment methods remaining gastrectomy. The authors conducted a systemic review of the Medline and Embase databases concerning the serum vitamin D level in post-gastrectomy gastric cancer patients, regarding all articles published until 22 May 2022 according to the PRISMA guidelines. 18 studies with a total number of 908 gastric cancer survivors were included in the analysis. The initial rate of vitamin D deficiency… Show more

“…Furthermore, the lack of zinc obstructs the elimination of oxygen-free radicals in the human body, which leads to DNA damage and causes carcinogenesis (25). Many studies are showing that the calcium level in the blood of patients with gastrointestinal tumors is lower than that of normal people, probably due to the lack of calcium intake in cancer patients due to malnutrition (29). However, it is considered that calcium has an inhibitory effect on digestive tract cancer, and its mechanism of cancer inhibition may be a direct or indirect inhibitory effect on epithelial cell proliferation (30).…”

“…In the case of diagnoses of cancer in the primary stages, the probability of 5-year survival is more than 80%. While late diagnosis greatly reduces survival (Muszyński et al , 2022; Wang et al , 2022). Total or subtotal gastrectomy is one of the first methods of GC treatments.…”

“…The global incidence and mortality of GC have declined in recent years, but GC remains the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in China [ 2 ]. Meantime, it is estimated to be the fifth most common and third highest mortality cancer in the world and remains an important global clinical and epidemiological problem [ 3 ]. Vitamin D (VD) is a hormone that is required for human physiological functions.…”
