Vitamin D Supplementation and Sleep: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Intervention Studies

Abstract: Background: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with sleep disorders and poor sleep quality. Whether vitamin D supplementation (VDS) helps resolve these problems remains unclear. Objective: To systematically review the effect of VDS on sleep quantity, quality, and disorders, and perform a meta-analysis of available data. Methods: The reporting of this review followed the PRISMA statement. VDS human interventions studies that reported on sleep quality, quantity, or disorders were included. “…There were major disparities in the research populations, including genetic, regional, and cultural background, outcomes and assessment techniques, treatment regimes, duration of study periods, and seasonality of testing. As stated in a recent scientific paper, the latter two may have a significant impact on the study's outcome [104].…”

“…Increased body weight is a risk factor for sleep apnoea 66 and perhaps the associated weight gain from infliximab or vitamin D deficiency increases the likelihood of sleep apnea and consequently more likely to have poor sleep. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with increased risk of sleep disorders 67 and supplementation has been associated with improvement in sleep quality 68 …”

“…Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with increased risk of sleep disorders 67 and supplementation has been associated with improvement in sleep quality. 68 Corticosteroids, known to cause sleep disturbances, 69 were associated with worse sleep quality scores and poor sleep. This replicates previous work showing worse sleep quality scores 15,23 in those on corticosteroids.…”

“…Low vitamin D status is quite common especially in the winter months in central Europe ( 5 ), and vitamin D deficiency has been associated with impaired sleep ( 6 ). Vitamin D seems to have an important role in sleep regulation ( 7 ).…”
