Vitamin D Status: Measurement, Interpretation, and Clinical Application

Abstract: Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, is now recognized not only for its importance of bone health in children and adults, but also for other health benefits including reducing risk of chronic diseases including autoimmune diseases, common cancer and cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D made in the skin or ingested in the diet is biologically inert and requires two successive hydroxylations first in the liver on carbon 25 to form 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], and then in the kidney for a hydroxylation on carbon 1 to … Show more

“…Laboratory work-up revealed a low serum AP activity (22 U/l), elevated PLP in the plasma (120 ng/ml, (normal range (nr) 5-30 ng/ml)), slightly elevated serum phosphate (1.96 mmol/l, (nr 0.81-1.94 mmol/l) and a low level of 25(OH)-vitamin D3 (20.9 mg/l (nr 30-70 mg/l))). 5 She was clinically diagnosed of childhood HPP at the age of 1 year.…”

“…The present study is one of the first addressing this issue in young children, based on the hypothesis suggested by Rodriguez-Rodriguez et al (11) . To assess vitamin D status, the serum concentration of 25(OH)D was measured, currently the best parameter for vitamin D status (5,20) . Next, the questions assessing the number of hours playing outside were based on Burdette et al (17) , concluding that parent-reported measures of outdoor playtime were significantly correlated to a direct measure of physical activity in children of pre-school age and are worthy of future evaluation as a survey measure.…”

“…For this analysis, vitamin D deficiency was defined as serum 25(OH)D ,20 mg/ml (12)(13)(14)(15) ; vitamin D insufficiency was defined as serum 25(OH)D ,30 ng/ml (11,15,16) . The more restrictive definition of deficiency as 25(OH)D ,15 ng/ml as has been used by others (1) was also utilized.…”
