Vitamin D Status in Spanish Elite Team Sport Players

Abstract: Low vitamin D is usual; however, data are limited for elite team players. The aim was to investigate the vitamin D levels in Football Club Barcelona (FCB) first division players of six sport modalities. Ninety-five elite male players (27.3 ± 4.6 y) belonging to FCB provided data for vitamin D throughout a season. In this study, 25(OH)D was measured in serum by chemiluminescent immunoassay. Outdoor/indoor training and supplementation were also considered. Total mean 25(OH)D concentrations were 91.9 ± 23.1 nmol/… Show more

“…These results suggest that the effect of vitamin D supplementation does not last long, and constant dosing is needed during periods of deficiency ( Table 3 ). This thesis was supported by Valtueña et al [ 43 ], who reported that athletes who train indoors (e.g. handball, basketball, or volleyball players) and are not exposed to sunlight during training sessions obtain significantly lower values of 25(OH)D concentration than soccer players (who performed their sessions outdoor).…”

“…CS openness or lack of Vitamin D alone didn't lessen the hypertrophic reaction of over-burden plantaris muscles, yet this hypertrophic reaction was debilitated when the two circumstances were joined. This information proposes that current smokers who likewise present with lack of Vitamin D might be more averse to react to a preparation program [38].…”

“…The results of the quantitative evaluation of diet among elite Polish basketball players allowed us to confirm the low supply of many nutrients, including dietary fibres and vitamins (B1, B9, C) and mineral salts (potassium, calcium, iodine) [ 20 ]. Among elite representatives of Spanish team sports, low blood levels of vitamin D3 have been described [ 44 ]. In this context, the importance of medical supplements recommended for athletes with vitamin and mineral deficiencies, including multivitamins, vitamin D and calcium, cannot be denied [ 7 , 9 ].…”
