Vitamin D receptor genetic polymorphisms are associated with oral lichen planus susceptibility in a Chinese Han population

Abstract: Background: Vitamin D receptor (VDR) is involved in multiple immune-mediated disorders including oral lichen planus (OLP). This study investigated the association between VDR gene polymorphisms and the risk of OLP. Methods: In total, 177 OLP patients and 207 healthy participants were recruited from the Affiliated Hospital of Stomatology, Nanjing Medical University. Eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs: rs731236, rs739837, rs757343, rs2107301, rs2239185, rs7975232, rs11574129 and rs11568820) in the VDR g… Show more

“…46 It has been suggested that such disturbances can affect the maintenance of skin homeostasis. 46 VDR polymorphisms can also be considered as genetic risk factors for sarcoidosis 47 with no effects of VDR SNPs on severity of sarcoidosis, 48 oral lichen planus 49 and atopic dermatitis. 50 The expression of VDR in inflammatory skin diseases is altered, but some study showed contradictory data.…”

“…Such anti-inflammatory effects are inhibited and eventually lead to lichen planus. In two studies by Kujundzic et al ( 25 ) and Shen et al ( 26 ) on the polymorphism of the rs7975232 VDR gene, different results were presented. It is noteworthy that the different results may be due to different ethnic populations and sample sizes.…”

“…From the 16 articles obtained after reviewing the abstracts, finally 14 appropriate articles were included in this study based on the entry and exit criteria shown in Figure 1 . Of the 14 articles selected, 4 studies examined serum levels of vitamin D in affected individuals ( 17 , 18 , 21 , 22 ), 2 studies studied the effect of vitamin D supplementation on OLP symptoms ( 23 , 24 ), in 2 studies, the association of VDR gene polymorphisms and OLP risk have been investigated ( 25 , 26 ) and 6 studies have investigated the mechanisms of OLP formation due to vitamin D deficiency ( 27 32 ) ( Table 1 ).…”

“…Studies by Du et al Show that vitamin D helps improve the immune response in patients with lichen planus by affecting the cellular pathway of inflammation (28). Recent findings suggest that vitamin D receptor genetic polymorphisms are associated with oral lichen planus in various populations in China (29).…”
