Abstract: Vitamin D insufficiency was nearly universal in this cohort of NA children and was associated with diabetes and vascular risk markers. Whether vitamin D supplementation can improve insulin resistance must be studied further.

“…Three studies have failed to find any association between vitamin D and insulin resistance in obese children [36,37,38]. Other studies report an inverse association between hypovitaminosis D and measures of insulin resistance and glycaemia in obese children [39,40,41]. Table 1 summarizes some of the recent studies that have investigated the association of 25(OH)D with glucose homeostasis in children.…”

“…In adults, low 25-hydroxyvitamin [25(OH)D] concentration have been found to be associated with higher risk of hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes [5] . In children, limited vitamin D data show an association with fasting hyperglycemia and insulin resistance [6,7] . Animal data show impaired insulin secretion during vitamin D deficiency [8] and an improvement in insulin secretion with vitamin D supplementation [9,10] .…”
