Vitamin D Deficiency with High Intact PTH Levels is More Common in Younger than in Older Women: A Study of Women Aged 39–64 Years

Abstract: Low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels are implicated as a risk factor for hip and spine fractures. Studies of the relation between 25(OH)D levels and fractures have primarily involved elderlyosteoporosis patients or patients with fractures; however, the serum 25(OH)D and parathyroid hormone (PTH) status in younger adult populations remains largely unknown. We evaluated serum 25(OH)D and intact PTH levels in 411 women aged 39-64 years who were not receiving medication for osteoporosis or other bone dis… Show more

“…At present, why the LL group showed such great variation in PTH levels, as reflected by high SDs is not clear. PTH levels are reportedly inversely correlated with those of vitamin D ( Miyamoto et al, 2016 ; Garnero et al, 1996 ), and inverse correlation between the two was observed in our subjects, including in the LL group ( Table 2 ). Low vitamin D levels, as indicated by 25(OH)D values lower than 30 ng/ml, were seen in all groups ( Table 1 ).…”

“…However, 25(OH)D levels were not associated with either TRACP5b or BMD values in any group or in the total population ( Table 3 ). Moreover, low vitamin D levels are often seen in the general population, even in people under 40 years old ( Miyamoto et al, 2016 ), as well as in our subjects. Thus, our metabolomics data may reflect general trends.…”

“…Accordingly, vitamin D deficiency is frequently seen in the elderly 43 , 44 . However, young people are equally vulnerable to low vitamin D status 45 47 , making vitamin D deficiency a general concern.…”

“…Taking low dose pills reportedly increases bone mineral density (BMD) 10 , but hormone replacement therapy is associated with an increased risk of stroke and venous thromboembolism 11 . Vitamin D also regulates bone metabolism 12 , and low vitamin D status is reportedly a risk factor for fragility fractures 13,14 . Low vitamin D levels are also associated with stress injuries 15,16 , and Vitamin D supplementation reportedly decreases occurrence of stress fracture 17 .…”
