Vitamin D deficiency rickets after vitamin D hypersensitivity with subcutaneous fat necrosis in the newborn period

Abstract: A case report is given on a child with severe subcutaneous fat necrosis following perinatal asphyxia. After the administration of 2 x 2.5 mgm of vitamin D at the age of two weeks the child developed hypercalcemia and severe soft tissue calcifications. In spite of a low calcium diet the hypercalcemia persisted while small doses of vitamin D were administered (240 I.U. per day); it disappeared promptly as soon as vitamin D was completely withdrawn.
