Vitamin D deficiency is independently associated with mortality among critically ill patients

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:Studies suggest an association between vitamin D deficiency and morbidity/mortality in critically ill patients. Several issues remain unexplained, including which vitamin D levels are related to morbidity and mortality and the relevance of vitamin D kinetics to clinical outcomes. We conducted this study to address the association of baseline vitamin D levels and vitamin D kinetics with morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients.METHOD:In 135 intensive care unit (ICU) patients, vitamin D was p… Show more

“…In our study population vitamin D level of 6.8 ng/ml was the best cutoff for identification of septic shock patients at a higher risk of death. The relationship between mortality and serum vitamin D levels in critically ill patients is a topic of debate in the current literature [39][40][41][42][43]. Our study is in agreement with some of the retrospective and prospective studies in the literature.…”

“…Moraes RB. et al [42] suggested that vitamin D levels under 12 ng/ml remained an independent predictor of mortality at critically ill patients in their cohort study. As Moraes RB.…”

“…They also reported no significant differences between the groups in terms of mechanic ventilation requirement and nosocomial infection rates. They did not evaluate cortisol levels (11). In our study, the patients were not divided into groups according to vitamin D levels, and the mean vitamin D level was quite low.…”

“…It has been shown that low level of vitamin D has emerging association with severity of the disease, mortality, and short life span in the ICU patients. In some studies, it was shown to be associated with extension of mechanic ventilator dependency, increase in infection rate, and long stay in ICU (8)(9)(10)(11).…”
