Vitamin D and health-related quality of life in a community sample of older Canadians

Abstract: PurposeTo assess how vitamin D status is associated with health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among older residents of Canada.DesignWe analysed baseline data of 1,493 Canadians aged 50 years and over in Alberta on HRQOL (EQ-5D-5L) and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) as a measure of vitamin D status. We applied multivariable regression methods to examine the association between vitamin D status and each of the five dimensions and the summary index of the EQ-5D-5L.ResultsParticipants with higher serum 25(O… Show more

“…The MID of the EQ-5D-derived health utilities for different health conditions has been estimated in the USA and the UK [16][17][18][19]. Although the EQ-5D is being increasingly used in Canada [20][21][22][23], MIDs have not yet been well established in this country. The objectives of this study were to measure the EQ-5D-derived health utilities associated with the selected chronic conditions and to estimate their MIDs based on the Commonwealth Fund Survey of Sicker Adults in Canada.…”

“…Only a few studies have investigated associations between vitamin D levels and aspects of general, emotional and functional health, and parameters of quality of life. A recently published cross-sectional study of older adults in Canada reported an association between vitamin D levels and health-related quality of life measured by the five-level EQ-5D (EQ-5D-5 L) instrument [14]. Patients with heart failure, diabetes and vitamin D insufficiency show worse physical function and lower muscle strength compared with patients without diabetes and adequate vitamin D levels [15].…”
