Vitamin D and Autoimmune Thyroid Diseases - a Review

Abstract: The essential biological action of vitamin D is regulation of calcium and phosphorus metabolism and preserving bone health. In recent years there have been reports about the extraskeletal actions of vitamin D and its role in the regulation of immune system. Vitamin D supplementation appears to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and infections and be able to reduce all-cause mortality. Deficiency of vitamin D has been found to correlate with the increased incidence of autoimmune diseases, … Show more

“…To date, VD deficiency (VDD) is a common finding among the general population worldwide [143], even if it is largely influenced by feeding behaviors (e.g., fortified food consumption is high in Northern Europe) [144]. VD may modulate immune system function, as observed in autoimmune thyroid diseases [145,146]. Activated antigen-presenting cells (APCs), natural killer (NK), T-cell CD4+, and B-cells typically express VD receptors on the cell surface and VD may modulate their activity [147].…”

“…Otros autores no han encontrado una correlación entre la TLC y la vitamina D 24 . Ante la presencia de estudios contradictorios, es difícil establecer una conclusión unánime en cuanto a la asociación entre la concentración de vitamina D y la TLC 25 .…”

“…Subsequently, D 3 is transported back to the liver and converted to 25(OH)D 3 by several cytochrome P450 mixed-function oxidases (CYP), such as CYP27A1, CYP3A4, and especially CYP2R1 [6,7]. 25(OH)D 3 is the storage form of VitD, and consequently due to its half-life of 2-3 weeks [8], the best marker to monitor VitD status. 1.25(OH) 2 D 3 may impact pathogenesis and prognosis of chronic, malignant, and endocrine disease [9][10][11].…”
