Vitamin D and atherosclerosis

Abstract: Vitamin D deficiency is widely prevalent in the United States and worldwide. Although deficiency of this fat-soluble vitamin is usually associated with musculoskeletal disorder, it is associated with a wide range of disease processes that include multiple organ systems. Recently, there has been mounting evidence linking vitamin D deficiency to cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis.

“…Another point of importance is that the risk of cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndrome has been found to be associated with psychotic disorders (Johnsen et al, 2011;Ringen et al, 2014). Increased cardiovascular risk is also related to inadequate S-25 OH D levels (Choi et al, 2014;Menezes et al, 2014;Ruwanpathirana et al, 2014). Elevated risk of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome in psychotic disorder in visible ethnic minorities has been demonstrated in long-term follow-ups (Henderson et al, 2005).…”

“…From a clinical perspective, there are many ongoing studies showing that 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 or its synthetic analogs can have anti-cancer effects, and can have beneficial effects on cardiovascular or autoimmune disease (Delvin et al, 2014; James et al, 1998; Menezes et al, 2014). Since there is some evidence supporting a role for HCMV infection in the progression of cancers (Michaelis et al, 2011; Soroceanu and Cobbs, 2011), cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases (Caposio, Orloff, and Streblow, 2011; Varani et al, 2009), our study could prompt questions regarding whether or not 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 and its synthetic analogs should be used therapeutically.…”

“…In fact, some researchers have suggested using nutraceuticals as adjuvants in the clinical practice (Braithwaite et al, 2014;Fergurson, 2009). Among nutraceuticals, vitamin D is related to a reduction on atherosclerosis, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and hypertension (Menezes, Lamb, Lavie, & DiNicolantonio, 2014). A dietary supplemental containing gamma linolenic acid, vitamin E, vitamin C, beta carotene and coenzyme Q10 may be considered in the treatment and prevention of dry skin associated with the use of oral isotretinoin (Fabbrocini et al, 2014).…”
