Vitamin D and 1,25(OH)2D Regulation of T cells

Abstract: Vitamin D is a direct and indirect regulator of T cells. The mechanisms by which vitamin D directly regulates T cells are reviewed and new primary data on the effects of 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D) on human invariant natural killer (iNK)T cells is presented. The in vivo effects of vitamin D on murine T cells include inhibition of T cell proliferation, inhibition of IFN-γ, IL-17 and induction of IL-4. Experiments in mice demonstrate that the effectiveness of 1,25(OH)2D requires NKT cells, IL-10, the IL… Show more

“…The inhibitory effects of 1,25(OH) 2 D on T cell production of IL-17, IFN-␥, and IL-2 are identical in human and mouse cells (11,12,24,25). The induction of FoxP3 ϩ T reg cells by 1,25(OH) 2 D has also been demonstrated to occur in human and mouse T cells (11,12,24,25). Some pathways are not identical; for example, the 1,25(OH) 2 D-induced production of cathelicidin occurs only in human but not mouse macrophages (2).…”

“…Ancak net bir şekilde implantolojide D vitamini takibinin rutin olarak yapılamamış olması bu konuda ortaya konulacak kanıtlar için bir eksikliktir. 66 Vitamin D yetersizliği ve implantların erken kaybı arasındaki ilişki net olarak kanıtlanamamıştır. “…T cell is also the target of vitamin D3 for immunomodulation. 35 Four major mechanisms of calcitriol influencing T cells proposed are: (1) direct effects due to systemic calcitriol levels; (2) intracrine effects due to the synthesis of calcitriol by the T cells; (3) paracrine effects of the APCs, which also synthesizes calcitriol, and (4) indirect effects due to changes in the APC, which present less antigen. As already said, calcitriol induces the more immature and tolerogenic forms of monocytes during their differentiation and maturation into DCs.…”
