Vitamin B12 status in kidney transplant recipients: association with dietary intake, body adiposity and immunosuppression

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of vitamin B12 (B12) deficiency in kidney transplant recipients (KTR) and its possible association with B12 dietary intake, body adiposity and immunosuppressive drugs. In this cross-sectional study, we included 225 KTR, aged 47·50 (sd 12·11) years, and 125 (56 %) were men. Serum levels of B12 were determined by chemiluminescent microparticle intrinsic factor assay and the cut-off of 200 pg/ml was used to stratify KTR into B12-sufficient or B12-deficie… Show more

“…Variants of this gene have been linked to low blood levels of vitamin B12, especially when following a vegetarian diet. Vitamin B12 deficiency is also associated with a diet low in meat and dairy products, total or partial resection of the stomach, resection of the ileum, the use of metformin, drugs blocking the secretion of gastric acid, and others [ 18 ]. Vitamin B12 deficiency leads to hematological and neurological symptoms, including glossitis, fatigue, macrocytic anemia, and peripheral neuropathy.…”

“…Vitamin B12 deficiency leads to hematological and neurological symptoms, including glossitis, fatigue, macrocytic anemia, and peripheral neuropathy. Additionally, vitamin B12 deficiency is strongly associated with hyperhomocysteinemia, which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) [ 18 ].…”

“…There is some understanding of the impact of immunosuppressive therapy on the nutritional status of patients within the initial year following kTx. Researchers examine various outcomes such as weight, the prevalence of diabetes, lipid abnormalities, or deficiencies in minerals and vitamins [33][34][35][36]. For example, in a cross-sectional study, vitamin B12 deficiency was linked to reduced dietary intake of B12 as well as the use of mycophenolate mofetil [33].…”

However, in a clinical trial, cyclosporine was associated with increased HDL and LDL cholesterol levels at 1-month post-transplant.…”
