“…In the literature GEU appears mainly as a problem in chickens (Fossum et al, 1988;Pfeiffer, 1992), and above all in broilers (Johnson & Pinedo, 1971;Janssen & Germs, 1973;Okuda et al, 2004;Novoa-Garrido et al, 2006). GEU in young turkeys has very rarely been described in the scientific literature (Sherwood & Sloan, 1954;Fletcher & Abdul-Aziz, 2008), although it is well recognized as sub-lethal lesions, as a cause of sporadic increase in mortality, and as a cause of gizzard condemnation at slaughter in Norway (unpublished data from our laboratory and from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority).…”

“…Studies on the effect of experimental vitamin B 12 deficiency on GEU have produced contradictory results (Mushett & Ott, 1949;Sherwood & Sloan, 1954;Daghir & Haddad, 1981). Sherwood & Sloan (1954) found a protective effect against GEU in turkeys of choline, and Daghir & Haddad (1981) detected a significant increase in GEU severity among vitamin B 6 -deficient chickens. The severity of GEU among vitamin B 6 -deficient chickens was reduced by adding taurocholic acid to the diet.…”

“…A level of 2.5 meg vitamin B12 per kilogram of ration almost completely prevented the gizzard disorder in chicks from hens fed a commercial breeder ration, while 10 meg were required for a similar effect in chicks from hens fed an all-vegetable ration. Sherwood and Sloan (1954) studied the effect of vitamin B12» choline and methionine on gizzard erosion in Broad Breast ed Bronze poults. Vitamin B12 did not have a consistent ef fect on gizzard erosion, but choline reduced gizzard erosion when added to the ration and also produced relatively smaller gizzards.…”
