Vitamin B-6 Inadequacy Is Prevalent in Rural and Urban Indonesian Children

Abstract: The vitamin B-6 status of Indonesian children was evaluated by determining their dietary vitamin B-6 intakes, erythrocyte alanine aminotransferase activity coefficients and plasma pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) concentrations. Thirty-eight third-grade elementary school children (ages = 8-9 y) in rural and 39 in urban areas of Bogor, West Java, Indonesia, voluntarily served as subjects. The subjects included 39 male and 38 female students. The mean vitamin B-6 intake of the subjects was 0.57 mg/d. Fifty-five percent… Show more

“…Vitamin B‐6 deficiency has been found to be common in China (Ronnenberg et al, 2000), India (Lakshmi et al, 2001), Indonesia (Setiawan et al, 2000), and Thailand (Changbumrung et al, 1985; Vudhivai et al, 1991), thus our findings of a high prevalence in the Philippines may be part of a regional problem in Asia. While vitamin B‐6 deficiency is known to result from the use of isoniazid and oral contraceptives (Sauberlich, 1999), the widespread regional pattern of vitamin B‐6 deficiency is more likely the result of poor and monotonous diets (Munger, 2002).…”

“…Estimates in a 2001 Indonesian study were 10% of children in urban areas and 40% of those in rural areas (30). In 1990 it was reported that w40% of peri-urban Egyptian mothers had low concentrations of the vitamin in their milk [<415 nmol/L (0.10 mg/L), mean 435 (0.11 mg/L) nmol/L], although their status was not assessed.…”

“…While most of the research on the effects of B vitamins on the brain in children has centered on the role of folate in the development of the neural tube, 88 the findings of B 12 and B 6 deficiencies in some countries such as Indonesia 89 and India 90 have raised concern, as both have been related to proper cognitive development. Indeed, Refsum et al 90 suggest that long-term effects of even mild, subclinical B 12 deficiency may have implications for cognitive development in children.…”
