Vital exhaustion in relation to lifestyle and lipid profile in healthy women

Abstract: "Vital exhaustion," characterized by fatigue, irritability, and demoralization, precedes new and recurrent coronary events. Biological mechanisms explaining this association are not fully understood. The objective was to investigate the relationship between vital exhaustion, lifestyle, and lipid profile. Vital exhaustion, smoking, body mass index (BMI), alcohol consumption, exercise capacity, and serum lipids were determined in 300 healthy women, aged 56.4 +/- 7.1 years. No statistically significant associatio… Show more

“…Vital exhaustion is associated with a number of metabolic, hemodynamic, and immune responses that are known to be important for the development and progression of cardiovascular disease. Included among them are: abnormal lipid metabolism (4), decreased fibrinolysis and increased coagulation (5, 6), diurnal variations in fibrinolysis and coagulation (7), and low heart rate variability (8). Vital exhaustion is also associated with increased immune-mediated inflammation, which is a key factor in atherosclerosis.…”

“…On the other hand, some studies have described psychological factors in triggering of various diseases such as coronary heart disease, 14 fatigue and excessive work as important in the regulation of biological parameters, such as lipid profiles, 15 and psychological events as modulators of immune response. 16 Other studies have evoked stress and fatigue as worsening factors for headaches and chronic CNS diseases, respectively.…”

“…In a study of healthy employees (Shirom, Westman, Shamai, & Carel, 1997), burnout in men was found to be predictive of cholesterol changes, evidenced two to three years later. A measure of burnout called vital exhaustion (VE) was found to be positively associated with atherogenic lipid profile in one study (Koertge, Ahnve, Schenck‐Gustafsson, Orth‐Gomer, & Wamala, 2003). As is evident from qualitative (Pressman & Cohen, 2005) and quantitative (Chida & Steptoe, 2008) reviews of positive affect and physical health, most past studies on these associations have used global measures of positive affects such as the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (Watson, Clark, & Tellegen, 1988).…”
