Visualizing the Shear Flow-Modulated Alignments in Cellulose Nanocrystal Films by the Mueller Matrix

Abstract: The microstructures of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) films grown from their aqueous suspensions are tuned by a shear flow during the formation of the films. The modulation of the chiral nematic organization of CNCs is visualized by the complete polarization analysis using Mueller matrix microscopy. Further optical simulation has ensured the comprehensive 3D structural analysis for the complex chiral structures of CNC films. As suggested by the optical investigation, regulating the helical structure under the she… Show more

“…The uniaxial orientation of the LC monomers induced by shear force is due to viscoelasticity of the ink. [43][44][45] The orientational state of the LC monomers after shear coating was observed by POM (Figure 3a-d). Optical birefringence dynamically changes according to the angle (𝜃) between the shear direction (SD) and the polarizer (or analyzer).…”

“…When aligning at high shear rates, CNCs gain translational entropy at the expense of rotational freedom . A recent study in 2023 indicated that the circular shear-flow-induced helical CNC reorientation is a complex process involving an early in-plane unwinding and a later helically vertical unwinding process as visualized by the complete polarization analysis and optical simulation . Shear-induced chiral nematic alignment offers excellent control over the orientation of the chiral nematic CNCs during EISA, which can be used to accelerate CNC assembly together with other approaches, such as continuous coating, filtration, and confined geometry extrusion …”
